Visit to Clerkenwell Design Week

This year Clerkenwell Design Week, London, celebrated its tenth year. With leading UK and international brands and companies filling showrooms, exhibitions and installations, the Blueleaf design team jumped at the opportunity to attend the event.

Blueleaf is very proud to have design teams across three offices in the UK, so Clerkenwell Design Week was the perfect opportunity for the team to get together for their monthly meeting before exploring the exhibitions together.

With over 300 exhibiting brands spread across Clerkenwell, there was plenty to see. As a team we went to view the Vetro show room. We would love to use these beautifully designed decorative tiles in one of our schemes to add interest to what can sometimes feel like a one-dimensional space. Breaking up the flooring in large café areas makes them feel less clinical and breaks up large areas.
The team then went on to visit the British Collection in St James Church, which featured local brands showcasing their new furniture and lighting design in this peaceful and enchanting space.

Also set in the grounds of St James Church was Project, spread across three pavilions, the team found a lot of inspiration from engaging with the vast number of leading brands and seeing new innovations for contract furniture. The garden, Saint John’s Square within St James Church was utilised as a living space with well-designed outdoor furniture. The garden had lots of sensory plants such as jasmin, foxglove and many herb varieties.

Walking around the streets of Clerkenwell, the team were fascinated by all the creative street art and installations by different designers and brands. Finally, finishing up at Platform, we visited the underground House of Detention, which allowed our designers to see an inspiring and atmospheric piece of architecture. It was a brilliant experience exploring up and coming talent and breakthrough brands spread around the old prison cells. Our designers gathered ideas about the latest trends and got a clear understanding of what will be making a big impression in the design industry over the next year.

We are seeing natural colours and textures still influencing schemes with heritage inspired prints, pink is still a strong colour for 2019. We are also seeing more brave colour choices of deep rich pigments and accent jewelled tones. One of our designers’ favourites at the show was the collection for Arte by Moooi of extinct animals. Its striking jewelled accent colours shone off the rich flock black background and the nature inspired patterns were very playful.

Everyone felt very inspired after their day at Clerkenwell and loved visiting new and existing suppliers and being surrounded by such talented and creative designers. Now our team can continue to do what they do best and implement what they discovered in their next designs!
