Agincare has significantly reduced its environmental impact while maintaining high hygiene standards across its care homes, by introducing sustainable cleaning solutions.

Agincare

Background

Agincare grew from a single care home in Weymouth almost 40 years ago to become one of the UK’s largest independent care providers, with over 90 locations across the country. This family-owned organisation provides high-quality, affordable care to thousands of people, either in care and nursing homes, assisted and supported living accommodation, or in their own homes. It was one of the first care providers to win a local authority block contract to care for older people, and it now operates public-sector contracts nationwide.

The Challenge

Simon Luckhurst, Head of Procurement at Agincare, is on a mission to improve Agincare’s sustainability. He knows environmental credentials are increasingly important to residents, their families, and local authorities when choosing a care provider. Most importantly though, he believes improving Agincare’s ability to be kinder to the planet is, quite simply, the right thing to do.

Agincare has been a client of Blueleaf Care for many years, so Simon approached Ronnie Ward, his account manager, for advice on improving the firm’s sustainability, beginning with reducing plastic waste and CO2 emissions.

How we did it

Blueleaf started by reviewing all the consumable products used at Agincare settings, which revealed that switching from ready-to-use cleaning solutions to super concentrates and reducing the number of chemicals required would vastly reduce the carbon emissions from product deliveries. Agincare agreed to stop using 29 cleaning products and replace them with just nine Cleneco products. The new range still provides the full housekeeping and kitchen cleaning power, from degreasers to disinfectants, needed by all the care homes.

Rationalising the cleaning products reduces the amount of plastic used by 345kg a year, and switching to Cleneco means no waste ends up in landfill as all Cleneco packaging is made from recyclable plastic, even the Cleneco trigger sprays. This aligns with oneof the government’s key environmental goals to eliminate unnecessary landfill waste.  Measures such as a 20% increase in landfill taxes and the Simpler Recycling legislation—which mandates recycling quotas to reduce landfill and incineration—are driving change. By transitioning to Cleneco and streamlining its product range, Agincare is better-positioned to meet these legal requirements and avoid costly fines for non-compliance.

In September 2024, Cleneco products were rolled out across 90 locations. Blueleaf provided training for the new cleaning concentrates across all regions, which was seamlessly delivered online to avoid unnecessary emissions from driving up and down the country. When the care facilities were asked to provide feedback on the change, it was extremely positive about Cleneco and the training provided.

Simon Luckhurst values the long-term partnership with Blueleaf and the support Agincare receives to make positive changes: “We have been working with Blueleaf for over a decade, and they are so much more than a supplier,” he says. “They advised switching to the superdose Cleneco product range, which delivers a vastly reduced environmental footprint with the highest standard of cleaning, which is so important when looking after older people and those who draw on our services. We have taken a huge step forward with such a big reduction in our plastic waste and carbon emissions, but we aren’t finished yet,” explains Simon. “Ronnie and his team are now identifying more sustainable alternatives for a range of consumables such as wipes, paper goods, and sacks made from recycled plastic, to help Agincare further reduce its environmental footprint. The whole team, really understands our organisation and our people, and they are committed to helping us deliver the quality of care for our residents, our community and the environment, that we strive for.”

Ronnie is delighted with Agincare's successful rollout of Cleneco: “It has been great working with the team at Agincare to help them switch to a more sustainable future. Simon’s vision and leadership have been wonderful at driving change across the group. We are continuing to support Simon and his team with embedding the change across the care homes and look forward to identifying more opportunities to reduce the group’s environmental impact.”
