Background

Once the headquarters of chocolatiers Terry’s of York, it is now home to 82 individually-designed care suites and eight apartments, providing personalised care services including residential and nursing, respite, dementia and day care.

The Challenge

Set in a highly iconic Grade II-listed building, Springfield wanted to create something wholly new within the care sector. Blueleaf was tasked with delivering highly appealing and functional interiors within just eight weeks.

How we did it

Blueleaf, and project architects NORR, were tasked with taking the vision that Graeme Lee, Springfield Healthcare’s CEO, had mapped out and turning it into reality. Every element of the building’s original Art Deco features have been carefully restored and at its heart sits a central atrium. This is home to a ‘village green’, with a host of useful amenities, such as a spa, hair and beauty salon, café and restaurant, gym, sweet shop and even its own pub. At the centre of this space, is a giant mock oak tree made from wood cladding, spanning all three floors of the building. Enhancing its Art Deco heritage and creating the right environment

All the items that Blueleaf specified, from the bedroom furniture to atrium seats and furnishings, were carefully considered to ensure they reflected the 1920s period. There were concerns that the lounge area in the atrium would feel hollow and too spacious. Blueleaf were able to overcome this by providing ample seating and tables, carefully placed soft furnishings, and flora and fauna to create exceptional living areas. As well, a colour palette was established to complement and tie all of the different elements together.

Blueleaf’s Project Sales Director, said:

“Not only are we passionate about helping clients reach their goals, we take the time to fully understand their requirements from the outset and are meticulous about how it’s executed, from concept, right through to completion.”

The new-look care home has been a hit with residents and staff alike. On top of attracting 700 viewings on its first open day, The Chocolate Works has also scooped a number of accolades including the prestigious Pinders Healthcare Design Award for ‘Best Care Village’.

Blueleaf’s market-leading design and expertise, coupled with meticulously thought out interior design, furniture and equipment and close collaboration with several professional partners, meant that Graeme’s vision was delivered and in the space of just eight weeks.
